Alix is formerly the President of Architrave Consulting and Chief Operating Officer at The Center for Education Reform, creators of The Media Bullpen. She is a member of the Board of Directors of The Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP), where she co-chairs the "IN" Conference, and co-authors SSP’s blog, The Scholarly Kitchen. In addition, Alix serves on the editorial board of Learned Publishing, the journal of the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP).

Alix began her publishing career in marketing at The Chronicle of Higher Education. She has worked for UK-based CatchWord and Ingenta (now Publishing Technologies), and for the Australia- and UK-based Ebook Library. Other positions have included: President of Paratext, a publishing metadata company; Executive Director of the Reference Information Group at Congressional Quarterly (CQ) Press/SAGE Publications; and Director of Sales and Marketing at eJournal Press.

GeoScienceWorld’s Board of Directors sees Alix as a visionary who understands the bigger picture of society publishing and can develop new opportunities in the fast-changing world of technology. Board Chair, Dr. Colin P. North states, "GeoScienceWorld has developed rapidly to be a major provider of geological and geophysical research journals. It is helping to protect small publishers and specialist journals through a not-for-profit model that allows libraries to make the best use of their limited funds. We want to build on this success by expanding the information analysis tools, improve the search interface, and enhancing the range of content. To do this, we have been seeking a person with enthusiasm and imagination, as well as broad experience in the electronic publishing world, who will quickly take GeoScienceWorld to a much higher level. We believe Alix Vance is that person, and we are delighted she is joining the organization. Alix has demonstrated innovation and imagination, and her articles for The Scholarly Kitchen show critical insight."
